With the Rio Olympics fast approaching, excitement is building up across the globe about this sporting event. Earlier this year, GMO Research conducted a study comparing four countries in Asia Pacific on their level of interest in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The four participating nations were Australia, India, Malaysia and the Philippines. The survey provided an insight on consumer sentiments with regards this major sporting event across the region.
When asked on the level of interest in the upcoming Olympic Games, respondents in India registered the highest interest with 83.5% indicating an interest. In comparison, 74.9% in the Philippines were interested in the games and 64.6% in Malaysia felt the same. Those in Australia displayed the least interest with 60.3% indicating favorably. On the whole, the majority of respondents were fairly interested in the Rio Games.
When it came to watching the games, each country showed a different preference for which device to use when watching the Olympic Games. TV was the top ranking device among all countries, and was significantly higher in Australia. However, other devices such as PC, Mobile Phone, and Tablet were significantly lower in Australia while other countries ranked these devices as the next option after TV.
When asked about their favorite games to watch, swimming emerged a popular sport claiming the top spot in Australia, India and Malaysia. In the Philippines, basketball was voted the most popular sport to watch, with swimming in second place. Another sport that was featured among the top 5 sports across all 4 participating countries was Gymnastics.
By and large, there is considerable interest in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games across Asia Pacific. Interestingly, with the prdontdontevalence of mobile devices in the Asian countries, respondents in India, Malaysia and the Philippines indicated a stronger preference for these devices than those in Australia, when asked about watching the Olympic Games.
